CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
Blessed be the holy Trinity, +one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting. Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence is kept for reflection.
God-with-us,
we confess that we have turned away
those seeking shelter, claiming there is no room when we have plenty. We have made power and wealth our idols, while you show us true glory: a baby in a manger.
We have overlooked the shepherds, expecting good news in prettier packaging. Too often, we have valued violence instead of your peace. Turn us from our ways to your ways. Grant us the grace to begin again. Free us from all that keeps us bound, and forgive our sin, through Jesus Christ, who gives himself for us. Amen.
Hear the good news and rejoice! You are God’s chosen ones,
holy and beloved, forgiven in Christ, and freed to respond in joy.
Amen.
GATHERING HYMN Hymn #275
“Angels, from the Realms of Glory”
GREETING
The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray. Almighty God, you have filled all the earth with the light of your incarnate Word. By your grace empower us to reflect your light in all that we do, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for-ever. Amen.
Please be seated.
WORD
FIRST READING: Isaiah 60: 1—6
Jerusalem is assured that nations will make a pilgrimage to her because the light of God’s presence is in her midst. The bountiful food of the sea and the profits of international trade will come streaming to Jerusalem and thereby declare God’s praise.
1 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has
risen upon you. 2 For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. 3 Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your
dawn. 4 Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they
come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your
daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. 5 Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the
wealth of the nations shall come to you. 6 A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian
and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold
and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM: Psalm 147: 12-20
Refrain
12 Worship the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion, 13 who has strengthened the bars of your gates and has blessed your
children within you. 14 God has established peace on your borders and satisfies you with the finest wheat. 15 God sends out a command to the earth, a word that runs very swiftly.
Refrain:
16 God gives snow like wool, scattering frost like ashes. 17 God scatters hail like bread crumbs. Who can stand against God’s
cold?
18 The Lord sends forth the word and melts them; the wind blows, and the
waters flow. 19 God declares the word to Jacob, statutes and judgments to Israel. 20 The Lord has not done so to any other nation; they do not know God’s
judgments. Hallelujah!
Refrain
CHRISTMAS GOSPEL READING John 1: 10-18
John begins his gospel with this prologue: a hymn to the Word through whom all things were created. This Word became flesh and brought grace and truth to the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own peo-ple did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 15 (John tes-tified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes af-ter me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ ”) 16 From his full-ness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
The Gospel according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.
EPIPHANY GOSPEL READING Matthew 2: 1-12
God’s promise shines bright in the night as magi follow a star to honor a new king. Strangers from a faraway land, they welcome the long-awaited messiah of Israel.
1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Mes-siah was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’ ”
7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were over-whelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Please be seated.

HYMN OF THE DAY “Drawn to the Light” Hymn #593
THE NICENE CREED
Together with the whole church, we confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,*
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Please rise as you are able.
THE PRAYERS
. . .God of grace, Receive our prayer.
THE PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.
Let us share the peace with one another.
OFFERING
OFFERING MUSIC “I Saw the Light”

I wouldn't let my dear Savior in,
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night,
Praise the Lord, I saw the light

I saw the light, I saw the light,
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight,
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
2. I've walked in darkness, clouds covered me,
I had no idea where the way out could be,
Then came the sunrise and rolled back the night,
Praise the Lord, I saw the light Chorus
3. Just like a blind man I wandered alone,
Worries and fear I claimed for my own
Then like a blind man who God gave back his sight,
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
Chorus
I saw the light, I saw the light,
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight,
Praise the Lord, I saw the light

OFFERING PRAYER
Let us pray. God of heaven and earth, from the beginning, you have called forth life, in which you take delight. The trees, the fields, and the seas sing for joy. Bless now these gifts, received from your bounty, that we may join the chorus of creation to tell of your salvation from day to day. Amen.
MEAL
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise. . . We praise your name and join their un-ending hymn.
Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life:
Blessed are you for the birth of creation.
Blessed are you in the darkness and the light.
Blessed are you for the promise to your people.
Blessed are you in the prophets’ hopes and dreams.
Blessed are you for Mary’s openness to your will.
Blessed are you for your Son, Jesus, the Word made flesh.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming.
Come, Lord Jesus.
Holy God we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. Come, Holy spirit.
All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God
incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. Amen
Remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray…
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
