St. Andrew Lutheran Church Canyon Lake Spring Branch Bulverde New Braunfels

Notes from Pastor Paul -
Easter Season
I think Christians are often surprised to realize all the ways our secular celebrations have become quite different than the church traditions that began them. One thing we often miss is that for the church, Easter is a season, not just a day. The Easter season in some ways reflects the 40 days that Jesus was with his disciples after he rose and before he ascended. It includes 10 more days as the disciples waited for the Spirit Jesus promised them, and ends on the Day of Pentecost. For us, it takes a while for this good news to sink in. On Easter Day, we barely get past the shock of the empty tomb – the following weeks allow us to recount on Jesus’ appearances and teachings after the resurrection, and Jesus’ promise always to be with us through the gifts of the word and sacraments, Christian community and prayer.
Walk with Jesus through the days of Holy Week, and by all means, don’t miss the joy of Easter Day – but then settle in together to bask in the hope and treasure the peace Christ has won for us.

St. Andrew 50th anniversry Our 50th anniversary theme:
“We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe.”

These words are drawn from a hymn by Marty Haugen that we will surely be learning as the fall draws closer. Those words will guide our anniversary celebration as we remember the first 50 years of St. Andrew, celebrate the present, and believe in the future God is laying out before us. But at the same time, those words draw us deeper into the reason why this church was founded 50 years ago and why it exists today: to remember what Christ has done; to celebrate what God does among us through Christ; and to believe all that God promises.
What grace we have received! Pass it on.

Congratulations upcoming graduates!
Lester, Carson, Lauren, Ashley, Mikal Soo, and Emma. And to our "honorary member" graduate, Grace.

Could you use nursery services at 9 on Sundays?
We are ready to try an experiment during this busy time of year. Since we have choir, bell choir, and adult Bible study meeting at 9 a.m. on Sundays, could some of you join in if you had a nursery available? The nursery will be staffed in February, so if you have been wanting to try one of these activities, this is a great time to do so.

Women’s Big R
It’s not too early to start thinking about attending Women’s Big R at Camp Chrysalis in Kerrville. Women’s Big R is about Rest, Relaxation and Rejuvenation and interaction with Lutheran women from churches in our area.
During these few days, women will enjoy faith-inspiring Bible studies, interacting with young campers and counselors, and trying any of the camp activities they find interesting. Or, just relax! On Friday night there will be a special dinner and “night on the town.”
Faith and fun come together for women at this retreat. Share a quad cabin with other women.
DATE: August 8 - 10
COST: $170.00 ($100 Deposit and Remainder on May 1st or entire amount now)
Registration should be submitted by March 1 to ensure the St. Andrew group can be housed together. Go to the following website, create an account and continue with to Women’s Big R.

Backpack Ministry Information-
The third Sunday of each month emphasizes backpack ministry. Needy kids are given a gallon Ziploc bag filled with food items for the weekend to be carried home in a backpack. The number of requests has recently increased to 75 per week.
Each bag contains these items:
3 Breakfast Items - individual servings such as oatmeal, cereal, or pop tarts
3 Protein Items – individual servings such as spaghetti-O’s, beanie wienies, Vienna sausages, mac & cheese, etc.
2 Juice Boxes/Bags – individual servings such as fruit/ juice boxes
Other items include pudding or fruit cups, granola bars, pretzels, chips, cookies, peanut butter or cheese crackers, etc.

How you can help? You may shop for these items or write a check to St. Andrew designating it for backpack ministry and we will do the shopping for you.
Look for collection boxes in the narthex and fellowship hall.

Anyone who enjoys doing crafts is invited to join the Crafters on Thursdays at 9:30 am in the Craft room (right off the Fellowship hallway). Come and bring some new ideas or teach us something new. It is a great time of fellowship and fun.

Piecemakers Wednesdays—9 am
Come join the fellowship that we enjoy as we “piece” together all kinds of fabrics to make quilts for Lutheran
World Relief. Love is at the center of the process of making, donating, shipping and distributing LWR Mission Quilts. Buy a roll of batting for $80 and receive a quilt free. The quilt is on display in the fellowship hall on the quilt rack. Come have a look and help support this ministry.
